Modern ACOL uses pre-emptive bids at the 2 , 3 and 4 levels . If you have HCPs in the range of 5-10, you are considered weak.
If also you have a long suit you can consider a pre-emptive bid , which is designed to close down the bidding space of the opposition and cause them problems.
So if you are weak you can consider the following openings /overcalls :-
Preempts
No Cards | Bid Level | ||
---|---|---|---|
6 | 2 | ||
7 | 3 | ||
8+ | 4 |
At the 3 and 4th level bidding you can bid all suits , at the 2 level 2Clubs is still reserved for our strong bid. At all leveles you should have at least one high honour card , better still two . If you have say 6 cards to just a jack , consider not bidding !!
